Getting to Know Lubbock

Lubbock is the hub of West Texas, serving not only the people who live here but communities throughout the surrounding region.

One of the first things newcomers tend to notice is how easy it is to get around. You can live in one part of town, work in another and still have a commute that would make people in larger cities jealous.

And while Lubbock continues to grow, it still has that West Texas feel. You’ll run into people you know at the grocery store, local businesses are a big part of the community, and Friday nights in the fall still revolve around football.

Choosing Where to Live

One of the best things about buying a home in Lubbock is the variety.

You can find established neighborhoods with mature trees and homes full of character, newer developments with modern floor plans and amenities, larger properties with more land, and just about everything in between.

Areas like Tech Terrace offer established homes and a central location near Texas Tech, while South and Southwest Lubbock have seen significant residential growth with newer neighborhoods and easy access to shopping, dining and schools.

You’ll also find plenty of options outside the city limits in the smaller communities surrounding Lubbock.

The right area really depends on how you live, where you’ll be working and what matters most to you in a home,  which is why we always recommend getting to know several parts of Lubbock before narrowing down your search.

Schools and School Districts

If schools are part of your move, you’ll want to pay close attention to district boundaries when looking at homes.

The Lubbock area is served by several school districts, including Lubbock ISD, Lubbock-Cooper ISD and Frenship ISD. But those aren't the only options.

Families who are open to living a little outside the city may also want to explore some of the smaller communities and school districts surrounding Lubbock, including Shallowater, New Deal, Idalou, Roosevelt and Slaton.

Living in one of these surrounding communities can offer a different experience than living in Lubbock itself, so it’s worth considering what matters most to your family — whether that's a smaller-community feel, more space, proximity to work or staying closer to the amenities in Lubbock.

And no matter which area you’re considering, school district boundaries can vary from one neighborhood, and sometimes one street, to another. Always verify the assigned schools for a specific property rather than relying solely on the neighborhood name or mailing address.

Texas Tech Is a Big Part of Lubbock

You don’t have to be a Red Raider to live here, but there’s no denying that Texas Tech University is a huge part of the Lubbock community.

Game days bring an entirely different energy to town, and the university contributes to everything from healthcare and employment to arts, athletics and local events.

Texas Tech and the nearby medical district also bring people to Lubbock from all over the country, which means we regularly help buyers who are completely new to West Texas.

There’s More to Do Than You Might Think

We hear this one a lot from people who haven’t spent much time here: “What is there to do in Lubbock?”

Quite a bit, actually.

Lubbock has a growing food and coffee scene, local boutiques, wineries, live music, museums, sporting events, parks and plenty of community events throughout the year.

You can spend a Saturday cheering on the Red Raiders, grab dinner at a locally owned restaurant, catch live music, visit a winery or brewery, or head out to one of the many events happening around town.

And because Lubbock is still relatively easy to navigate, you can usually do more than one of those things without spending half your day sitting in traffic.

West Texas weather has a personality of its own. We get beautiful sunsets, plenty of sunshine, hot summers, occasional snow and, yes, wind.
